ahead, so a spring storm here will bring some heavy downpours at times, even some gusty winds 15 to 35 miles an hour. but it's those temperatures of about a 15 to 20 degree drop. you'll need those jackets and you'll need the chains going up into the sierra. there is a winter storm warning. i'll have all that coming up in about 15 minutes. kyra, back to you. all right, cynthia, thanks. we'll see you soon to follow today's rain as it moves through your neighborhood. be sure to download our nbc bay area app. all you have to do is open your phone's camera and scan that qr code on the left side of your screen. it will take you directly to our free app. interstate 80in the north bay is clear. this morning, but during friday's already busy evening commute, this was the traffic backup from a police standoff with a shooting suspect this morning, the chp tells us that suspect is in critical condition after an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound today in the bay's pete serrano explains the day long ordeal. hour after hour, commuters waiting to get where
7:03 am
they had to go, drivers along interstate 80 east into fairfield, all because of a police standoff on the freeway. the traffic getting so bad some had to pull over. when i see on the gps it's red for a long, long distance. i was coming here to fairfield. i just got on right there and then i said, oh, and i've been here for i don't know, an hour and a half or so. according to chp, the incident began along 101 in santa rosa, with the suspect shooting at a woman inside of an suv. she wasn't hurt, but was able to give police a description of the suspect's car, which was located in a shopping center. the suspect, refusing to stop for police, leading them on an hours long chase through marin county over the richmond-san rafael bridge along i-80 into fairfield , with the chase coming to an end after the driver hit a spike strip at the 680 interchange, the suspect sat in the car, leading to an hours long standoff during friday rush hour, causing a ten mile backup in both directions. it's only one way. yeah, right. no, don't have another street. maybe

another option friday nights to be expected, but this is like insane. reporter just after 630, police remove the driver from the car. he was rushed to the hospital. westbound lanes were reopened shortly after. the case is now under investigation by the solano county da's office. we reached out for an interview, but have not heard back. pete serratos today in the bay area and in the south bay, two police officers are recovering from gunshot wounds they suffered in a shootout inside a san jose hotel as jpd believed the suspect was planning to shoot a mother and her three children hiding inside a hotel room. this morning. one police officer is out of the hospital, but the other remains in critical but stable condition. today in the bay's jocelyn moran tran reports two officers are recovering after a shootout with a gunman on thursday night at the extended stay hotel on san ignacio avenue. erika nava says she was staying a couple of doors down from where the shooting happened on the third floor. i thought i was dreaming

and heard like fireworks and then all of a sudden, about two minutes later, bam, bam bam. police say the front desk clerk called on behalf of a guest that said a man she knew was knocking on her door. earlier that evening, the same guest reported that same man, someone she had a restraining order against, was on his way to her location. that man was 33 year old kevin briones, a convicted felon with a long criminal history. police say this body cam photo shows officers confronting briones in the third floor hallway. that's when police say briones reached into a duffel bag and pulled out a stolen gun. the suspect fled, running away from the officers while continuing to shoot multiple rounds at them. at least one officer returned fire and struck the suspect. briones jumped from the third floor onto the ground. officers located and arrested him nearby. one of the officers shot was hit in the shoulder, sources say. the other was hit in the upper body, knee and thigh. inside the hotel was a mother and three children. police believe briones was coming to shoot that mother and the children. it became apparent

that their lives were likely saved by the responding officers in the room was a survivor of a recent domestic violence attack. we learned that the suspect had an arrest warrant for that domestic violence incident. acting san jose police chief paul joseph says this incident highlights three epidemics illegally possessed guns, the dangers of domestic violence cases and the violence officers face every day. in the last 15 months, 12 san jose police officers have been shot at by criminals, mayor matt mahan said. they also need to better address repeat offenders and continue pushing to fully staff the police department. last night's events offer a stark reminder of the solemn oath they take to protect and serve our city, and the immense personal risk they assume. jocelyn moran, nbc, bay area news. the officer who remains in critical condition, has been with the sapd for just one year. the other injured officer has three and a half years of experience. that shooting suspect remains in critical but stable condition,

and we have new details this morning about a deadly crash that took the lives of parents and their two children in the east bay last week. we have learned that just days after the crash, the owner of the car the family was in filed a complaint with the national highway traffic safety administration. the owner claims they had previously had steering problems with the electric car. a 2023 vinfast vf eight manufactured in vietnam time. the owner says they lent the car to coworker tyrone george. george was driving that borrowed car when it crashed into a tree and burst into flames. he, his wife and their two sons were killed, according to the federal complaint. the owner of the car worries that george experienced the same steering problem when the crash happened, and the nhtsa, better known as nhtsa, is now investigating. it has been nearly two weeks since pro-palestinian demonstrators

set up tents on uc berkeley's campus, and they say they have no plans on leaving until the university meets their demands. among those divestment from any company that does business dealings with israel and the administration's support of a cease fire, the camp has more than 150 tents filled with supporters, organized ers say they expect that number to grow as the pro-palestinian demonstration gains ground and incidents increase. some jewish students say they worry about their safety on campus, as cal berkeley has added security and is providing an escort service for concerned students in san francisco. officers made a major bust at an illegal gambling den. it happened thursday night in the city's tenderloin district on ellis street. that's where narcotics officers served a search warrant, taking more than a dozen illegal gambling machines. a loaded firearm, drugs and $3,000 in cash. a 45

year old woman from oakland is now under arrest, accused of running that illegal gambling operation. sfpd says this bust is part of its larger efforts to address the city's ongoing drug crisis and happening today, a gun buyback giving you money for your firearms, no questions asked. the san mateo county sheriff's office is encouraging anyone with a gun that they no longer want, nor need to turn it in. you'll receive between 50 and $200 depending on the weapon . you can bring your firearms to the county courthouse in south san francisco. again, no questions. asked. it will remain completely anonymous. the gun buyback in south san francisco starts at ten this morning, goes until two this afternoon as the battle continues surrounding the safety of autonomous vehicles, more robo taxis are being allowed to come to bay area streets in the coming weeks. waymo is going to start testing its driverless cars on a portion of the peninsula north of san

cloudy skies over walnut creek. nice to see those green hills though. they might be getting a little greener today with some rainfall. good news though, the warmth is coming back. cynthia will be along in just a few minutes with your full microclimate forecast, but first, could a sort of bourbon street like in new orleans be coming to the bay area? that's the hope of the office of the san francisco mayor, along with local bar and restaurant owners. if a newly proposed ordinance is passed, a portion of front street in the city's financial district would become a go to nightly hotspot. the area in question is the 300 block of
7:14 am
front street, which already is the go to party spot on saint patrick's day, a recently passed law written by state senator scott wiener would let bars and restaurants on that block serve alcohol in the street. the goal is to attract the kinds of crowds seen at first thursday events. it is clean, it is safe. it's sunny, it's flat. i mean, it is the great pedestrian place to be. i think the city would still have to approve an ordinance describing what would be allowed in that special entertainment zone. happening today, a day of movement in san francisco to support people with parkinson's disease. the parkinson's foundation is hosting the annual moving day at crissy field. it starts at nine this morning. dylan james, the president of the parkinson's foundation california chapter, says the event is a huge success. every year we do a short ceremony which has some

movement. demonstrations will also be honoring cecilia beam, the manager and lead teacher of the sf ballet class for people living with parkinson's. so a nice little honoring of her work . but then we will start the five k walk and san francisco always shows up. so it's going to be a beautiful picture postcard for all of us being out there. the event is expected to draw more than 400 people, all the money raised will go to supporting cutting edge research , care and education programs to improve the lives of people with parkinson's disease as well as their families. all right. well, as we mentioned earlier in this newscast, today is the run for the roses. so get your mint juleps, your big hats and your horse picks ready because today marks the 150th running of the kentucky derby in the north bay. today, for the fourth year in a row, kendall jackson wine estate is bringing the excitement of churchill downs to sonoma county. it's hosting the west

coast largest kentucky derby watch party. currently, tickets are sold out. guests who attend will enjoy large screen viewing of the races throughout the day on these giant 16 by nine led screens, then we'll also have derby inspired cuisine, from local restaurants, paired with our award winning wines, of course. and then musical entertainment between the races throughout the day. and if you don't have tickets already for that event, remember you can watch the 150th running of the kentucky derby today right here on nbc. bay area coverage starts at 1130 this morning, 23 years ago in east bay comic book shop started a movement. and now that comic book store is getting ready to close its doors. today marks the event it began annual free comic book day. it's now a global phenomenon, and it all

started here at flying colors comics, located at the oak grove shopping center in concord. it actually opened back in 1998. the owner says the event helped unite the comic book industry was actually very surprised that it came off the way it did, the comic book business tends to be a, one in which everyone does their own thing and doesn't come together all that often, but with free comic book day, the entire industry came together to do something good and move us all forward. flying colors comics is expected to close early next year, with hopes that it will actually reopen somewhere else. free comic book day at the oak grove shopping center in concord starts at 11 this morning. also today, may the 4th be with you for today every star wars lover is may the 4th, and danville is making sure the force is felt. there will be
7:18 am
activities running all day long starting at 815 this morning until 1030. there's a jedi pancake breakfast that costs $10 and should be booked in advance. after that, there's a scavenger hunt, a jedi training and costume contest, and of course, a showing of return of the jedi and the ultimate star wars marathon continues. the alamo drafthouse cinema in san francisco is offering a 21 hour marathon to honor may the 4th. the skywalker marathon features all nine films. the event kicked off last night at 8:00. it ends tonight at 5:00. this is one of only ten theaters in america screening the complete skywalker saga. good day to sit indoors and watch star wars, because we've got some rain returning. cinthia pimentel is here with our microclimate forecast. yeah, the force is strong with this one, kira. it's dropping in from
7:19 am
the north, so it's bringing us a lot of changes in our microclimate forecast. i want to be running to run around out there and also, if you're hitting the roads, you need to be careful. we haven't seen rain through santa rosa through the bay area for a while. so that oil separation on the grounds could make it even more slippery. right now, our satellite radar returns are picking up on some heavier spots through the north bay down into petaluma, san rafael. it did creep into parts of san francisco and the peninsula about an hour and a half ago, and it's still spotty, making its way through the east bay and out towards the tri valley. still yet to bring us a lot of rain into the south bay. but it will be coming hour by hour for you, making you helping you make those saturday plans. i know lots of people have things going on, but we need to scale it back a little bit. maybe push those plans to tomorrow. expect some heavy rain right here through the next hour and into about the mid morning hours. it should start pushing down into the east bay, the south bay and the santa cruz mountains. and at times it could be really heavy, possibly even producing some afternoon thunderstorms. so watch for that
7:20 am
. however, as we go on into the middle part of the day, we do see some better clearing. however, it will be cold, so a lot of changes that we need to keep track on as we go on into two three. this afternoon the north bay starts to get a break and so does everybody else. as this starts to push its way south and east. and the good news is, as we go on into tomorrow, we will be waking up chilly. but those rain chances are lowering and we should be in for some more sunshine ahead. as far as those rain totals, we did get some updates here throughout the week. painting more of that picture of about half an inch out towards tracey maybe three quarters of an inch down here, if we're lucky. in san jose through los gatos, but it really is along the coast and through the mountains where we could be looking at about an inch. so a pretty significant late season storm. and also for the sierra winter is returning there with that winter storm warning. the estimates right now are about 1 to 2ft of some fresh powder. so just be careful if you have any plans to venture out there. i think waiting until tomorrow might be a better idea back here in the bay area, it's going to
7:21 am
feel like the sierra, with those temperatures only reaching into the upper 50s to some low 60s. and as we go into tomorrow, we'll be waking up with those chilly skies after this cold front. fast forwarding it on into monday, we could be looking at some showers to the north, but then building that high pressure once again. so we're at the bottom of this roller coaster right now, but we should be going way up into next week where we see some more sunshine, some better clearing and temperatures warming up in san francisco into those low 70s and from 70s to possibly some upper 80s by the end of next week. so we're starting off may with some showers, but then we should be seeing some sunshine and summer like temperatures by the end of next week, and hopefully some may flowers. cynthia. thanks 721. right now we have much more ahead on today in the bay coming up, one man's love for biking has branched into something so much bigger in this morning's bay area. proud how he's using his passion to better his community

and if you've ever enjoyed any of them, have you ever thought about all the work and the people who made them a reality? today in the bay's garvin thomas introduces us to one man doing just that, and we think he'll make you bay area proud. we're gonna we're gonna head out. when najari smith moved from new york city to the bay area 15 years ago, it it was a plane that took him to his new home. it was a

bicycle, however, that made it feel like home. my first year out here in cali, i went back to new york five times and i was very homesick, was looking to like, connect and meet folks and biking helped to do that. in the years that followed, nadjari got more and more into biking, joining group rides and volunteering at a local biking nonprofit. but then that group left town, leaving nadjari with a decision. when that bicycle nonprofit moved away, i, i felt like it still needed. there was still a need to have bicycle activity in richmond. so nadjari formed rich city rides and transformed himself from a hobbyist into an activist. hey, are you joining us for the ride? one of darsha favorite things to do is lead group rides on the trails in and around richmond, including the one that goes over the richmond san rafael bridge. when you're at three over here, you want to be on two over here.
7:26 am
nadjari believes bicycles are more than just a fun way to get from point a to say, point richmond. they have the power to literally transform a community. well, that's one less car on the road. it's one more parking spot that's available for people who are riding their bikes. they always have the best parking space. it's a lot more fun. you're able to absorb more of your surroundings. under the banner of rich city rides, nadjari has achieved quite a bit in richmond over the past decade. new trails, even spearheading the development of a new park. but it's still just the first miles of a long journey. nadjari says. this is, coming in 2025, and e-bike lending center is already in the works, as well as three new community hubs. bikes are our foundation, but it's leading us to see and understand other things that the city needs. other things that the community needs, and we're going to give it to them now, jarry says. you
7:27 am
won't even have to be a cyclist to appreciate the changes that will come, but biking will still be the best way to witness them. well, we're glad he left new york for the bay. thanks, garvin. 726 right now we have much more for you on today in the bay. coming up, the friday night commute in the north bay turned into a standstill for miles. what we're learning about the man suspected of a freeway shooting and a police standoff

in san jose may gray through our camera network. those winds picking up in san jose, oakland as that front approaches and temperatures in the mid 50s could be the warmest that we get today because we're going to revert things back and call this may uary. so may and february for today as we get the very drastic change in our conditions. the good news is that the weekend is not all ruined. we have better conditions for tomorrow. however, it will be cold so bundle up there and then we'll lose all those layers. warm up next week. so a drastic change. i have it all coming up in about ten minutes. kira. all right, cynthia, thanks to follow today's storm as it moves through your neighborhood, be sure to download our nbc bay area app. all you have to do is scan that qr code with your phone's camera. it will take you directly to that free app. this morning, we are learning that the suspect in a freeway shooting and a police standoff is alive in custody in the hospital after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound. you may have been impacted by

the day long ordeal. it began yesterday morning on highway 101 in santa rosa, where police say the man shot into a woman's suv. fortunately she wasn't hurt and was able to give police a description of his car. police then found his car in a shopping center, but he took off, forcing a chase through marin county and then east to i-80 into fairfield. the hours long chase ended after that driver hit a spike strip at the 680 interchange, but he refused to get out of his car, initiating a standoff that caused a ten mile backup. during the already busy friday evening commute. the traffic getting so bad some had to just pull over. when i see the ups, it's red for a long, long distance. i was coming here to fairfield. i just got on right there and then i said, oh, and i've been here for, i don't know, an hour. and a half or so. police eventually removed that man from the car again. he is in custody in the hospital. the

case is now under investigation by the solano county da's office and in the south bay. we are learning more about the two police officers shot in san jose during a gun battle with a domestic violence suspect. one officer still fighting critical injuries. this morning. it all started thursday night at a hotel on san ignacio avenue in the santa teresa neighborhood of san jose, just before 11 p.m. police say the suspect was trying to get to a woman he'd previously attacked while she was hiding in a hotel room with three children. officers responded, went up to the third floor of the hotel and saw that suspect walking away from the hotel room. police revealed to us this screenshot of their body camera video. the moment that suspect pulled out a gun and started shooting at them, both officers were hit. a rookie and another officer both wounded. the suspect allegedly jumped
7:34 am
from a third story window to escape. the police. police say that man has since been identified as kevin briones. he was arrested after being found hiding nearby. once other officers responded. he is said to have several warrants that make it illegal for him to have a firearm. he's now in critical condition at a hospital, but is stable. acting sapd chief paul joseph praised the actions of his officers. today. i am thankful our officers survived a gun battle with a very bad individual and for them, stepping into the line of fire to ensure the safety of a mother and her children, i know that i could easily be here delivering very different news today. this outcome is a result of courageous san jose police officers who answered a call for help and were willing to sacrifice their own lives to save the lives of people they had never met. the officer who is in critical condition, has one year of experience on the force. he is affectionately called the rookie by his fellow officers. the other officer who
7:35 am
was shot has three and a half years with the sapd in the last 15 months. 12 san jose police officers have been shot at by criminals. turning now to our continuing coverage, it has been nearly two weeks since pro-palestine demonstrators first set up their tents on the campus of uc berkeley. protesters say they have no plans to leave until the university meets their demands. among those demands, divestment from any company that does business with israel and support of a cease fire by the berkeley administration, the camp has more than 150 tents filled with supporters, and they only expect that number to grow as the pro-palestinian demonstration gains ground and incidents increase, some jewish students worry about their safety on campus. cal berkeley says it has stepped up security and is providing an escort service for students who are concerned. meanwhile, crews have cleaned up
7:36 am
the pro-palestinian encampment at ucla following the protests. there, heavy equipment was moved onto the school's campus thursday to clean up following the week long protest, demonstrators were given a dismissal notice wednesday after authorities declared the encampment was a, quote, unlawful assembly and ordered the demonstrators to leave the area. officers in riot gear advanced on the encampment. more than 200 people were arrested during the process. the cleanup crews moved into the area after the encampment was cleared of protesters, and israel and hamas militants appear to be seriously negotiating a cease fire in gaza and the return of israeli hostages. nbc's raf sanchez reports from tel aviv. for days now, israel, the us and the world have been waiting for hamas to respond to the current cease fire proposal. but hamas not yet giving a definitive answer, instead saying it will
7:37 am
send negotiators back to cairo as soon as possible to continue discussions and try to finalize an agreement. now that is positive on the one side, but also an indication that hamas is not yet ready to give an answer. either way, israel says time here is not unlimited and that despite american opposition, it is preparing to move ahead with an assault on the city of rafah. now, more than a million palestinian civilians are sheltering there. the white house says any attack would be a disaster, but israel says it has no choice. it needs to go into that city and destroy the remaining hamas battalions, who are hiding there. there is, at this point, more aid getting into gaza than before. that's partly because israel has opened up a new crossing under intense american pressure. the white house also says that it is just days away from the completion of an american military temporary pier off the coast of gaza,
7:38 am
which is designed to bring more food in by sea. secretary of defense lloyd austin overnight saying at this point, the us does not have any intelligence that indicates that hamas would attack american forces manning that pier. but he pointed out that this is a battle zone, and it is an unpredictable situation. ralph sanchez, nbc news, tel aviv. back here locally, we have an update now on the closure of highway one in big sur. and when you'll be able to visit the coast once again in march. a portion of the southbound lane of highway one fell into the pacific after heavy rains. right now, you might know cars are only allowed through in convoys twice a day. governor gavin newsom announced the road will reopen by may 25th memorial day weekend, and he says the feds will help pay for the federal government to support our efforts. and we're signing an emergency proclamation to be able to draw
7:39 am
down federal dollars to do just that in order to reopen the highway, crews will install a temporary signal. traffic will be subject to alternating one way traffic control. 38 past the hour right now on your saturday morning. still to come on today in the bay, a family that treats martial arts not only as a hobby, but a tradition we celebrate asian american, native hawaiian, and pacific islander heritage month when we return

7:42 am
we have rain returning in the bay area that may gray through san rafael. right now, 55 degrees continuing through the city. that rain is already there on our lands and through san jose. it's just starting to peek into the south bay. we notice that cloud cover in the movement of this front and through the next couple of hours, through about the midmorning, that's when we can expect some of the heavier downpours. let me show you right now in our hour by hour outlook, about 9 a.m. 10 a.m, all the majority of the heart of the bay is seeing those heavier downpours in that yellow color. it will transition into the east bay and the south bay southern peninsula. as we go on approaching the lunchtime hour, bringing about the wind and that cold as this storm system drops in from the north. however the good news is that as we go on into the second part of saturday, we do see some better clearing. but depending on how fast we warm up, we could also
7:43 am
be looking at the potential of some thunderstorms brewing mainly through the north bay. and then as we go on into the second half of our weekend, this is where people will be a little happier with me this weekend as we go on into sunday, we do see some better clearing. could start out with a few spotty showers in the morning, but that's about it. the other thing that i want you to look for this morning, aside from the umbrella, is those winter jackets. our hour by hour temperatures actually show us cooling into the afternoon as this front makes its exit from the bay area it's going to leave behind those gusty winds and temperatures only in the low 50s out there in the tri valley. that's the lows that we're starting with this morning. so it's going to be very chilly into the afternoon. need you to protect anything that is vulnerable to the cold. as we go on into the start of our sunday, it will also be pretty chilly. some spots could get down into the 30s because of this passing storm system. so it is something that we do have to deal with. but into the next week we will be looking at some major changes. while south lake tahoe looks beautiful right now, very picturesque. there isn't actually, there is actually a
7:44 am
winter storm warning. as we look at about 1 to 2ft of snow, some of those snow levels could be dropping down into about 5000ft. so some travel delays are possible there as i extend this forecast on into the next week, we could be looking at some rain that moves into the north. so away from the bay area, and then actually brings us some warmth. i want to show you the ten day outlook for parts of calistoga. look at that. we are climbing, climbing, climbing into the second half of the week. we could be looking at those 80s, possibly trying to flirt with 90s. by the time that we get into friday, and the extended outlook right now for san francisco is also staying pleasant in the 70s by the end of the week. wow gorgeous. a

presses junior makes good on his pledge to his father. when they block this, i put, i put my hand here. i travel all over the united states and promoting filipino martial arts just like that. this is a simple as it is. the martial arts techniques developed by presas father is known as modern arnis, employing weapons in self-defense. it includes sticks, knives, maybe even a ballpoint pen. you improvise things that you have with you. you can use it as a weapon not to hurt anybody, but to defend yourself. black with the right. but there's more to this school than just learning to fight and defend for many, it's a connection to culture. people don't only train here just for physical nature, they train here for cultural reasons. social reasons. right? they want to connect with their roots. for joseph bautista, owner of legacy filipino martial arts, that link between culture and martial arts is directly tied to the precious family. the precious family is

one of the major, major components as to keeping filipino martial arts alive, right? they help to get filipino martial arts implemented in the school system in the philippines. they helped promote it worldwide. and it's like that there. i can take you down, see what my father would say is that when you learn the filipino martial arts, you're able to learn the filipino culture and become filipino. you block. a lot of it is being going to flow. being able to move with the current, being able to adapt. and that's something that filipinos historically had to do. having to move to america, having to fight for our own rights. this is as simple as it is the family legacy begun by precious junior's father and uncles, handed down to him doesn't stop here. his daughters , joanne and samantha precious, are the next generation, with samantha hoping to carry on teaching. i hope to possibly teach it one day, and i do see her taking over one day and i'm behind her 100% from here. i

hopefully today's rain won't impact all of those events. yikes! i wish they would have pushed it back into the afternoon, because we do have some of those heavier rain bands right now for the start of our saturday. taking it hour by hour, where you see those areas of yellows and dark reds. that's some heavy rain pushing in at times through at least the lunchtime hour down here into san jose. the good news is that it does start to clear into the afternoon, but then giving way into sunday, we see clear skies, but those temperatures are going to drop, so we're about 15 to 20 degrees cooler than where we were yesterday. through san francisco and our inland valleys. we'll see the showers today start to clear out tomorrow and the rain pushes to the north as we go on into monday, and high pressure builds on in right behind that. warming up into the 70s by the end of the week in san francisco. and i've said it once again, if we see 70s in the city, we see warmer temperatures inland as we go on from the major drop in temperatures today to a bit warmer. by the time that we
