a lot of shoppers, including us. this is today in the bay thanks so much for joining us on this monday morning. i'm kris sanchez and i'm laura garcia. hope you had a great weekend. and what are we in store for weather wise? we got a little mix of everything over the weekend. it was crazy on saturday, saturday. i mean it started out mild, then it started raining, then the temperature dropped and we are now still feeling that cold air behind that system that came in and brought us all of that rainfall. it is now 40 degrees. that's one of the colder temperatures we're seeing in santa rosa, as well as in san martin. starting out with the chilly morning. and we're in the low 40s in dublin, upper 40s for san jose and 49 now in san mateo, in menlo, menlo park, we're at 45 degrees. and look at the trend we'll see over the next few hours, going from mid 40s to upper 50s and then eventually into the low 60s for today, with a mostly sunny sky and a lot of the numbers that

we'll see today still slightly cooler than normal, but we are going to warm up quickly as we go throughout the week, so we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike, do you still have delays through pleasanton? we do carry, but typically this time of day we would start to see the delays. we're actually starting to see a lot of improvement as the commute is building. so we're going to probably hold similar flow for the next hour or so. we're looking at south 680 slowing right around bernal. the earlier crash and debris have cleared from the roadway, but there's still activity in the area. so watch for the distraction. now we're looking at the slower drive down in towards sunol and pleasanton. in that portion of 680. a little build. there's a disabled vehicle just off the castro valley y. but we see that slowing just starting for southbound 880 past the san mateo and then down toward the dumbarton bridges, which moves smoothly across the bay peninsula side just fine. the south bay shows your typical pattern kind of easing into the next slowdown, which will happen at about 640 typically. and then the bay bridge has had the backup typical since about 540. we've seen the build but still pretty loose as far as the

crisis on the ground, which is 100% the fault of hamas. just like every civilian casualty in gaza is 100% the fault of hamas. the only way to have permanent peace, economic development and the provision of basic services in the gaza strip is for hamas to be excluded from political governance going forward, as the fighting continues, so do anti-war protests. some of these protesters have become very violent and students, especially jewish students, have the right to feel safe on a campus and they've gotten out of control, and everybody has the right to protest peacefully. prime minister benjamin netanyahu has vowed to resist international pressure to halt the war. and on tuesday, president biden is scheduled to make a speech on anti-semitism during a holocaust remembrance ceremony at the u.s. capitol. kris, laura. all right. thank you. brie well, today, the us secretary of state will visit

lot of adjustments because of the rise in retail thefts. absolutely right. laura, we've talked about this before. as you mentioned, several stores here in the city have revised their self checkout strategies. today. lawmakers will consider a proposal that will make those adjustments more concrete across the entire state. now, this bill proposes that grocery stores or retail drug stores, they will be prohibited from offering self checkout options unless all of these conditions are met, including checkouts are limited to ten items or less. at least one manual self checkout station is available. customers are also prohibited from purchasing certain items, and the employee can monitor up to two self-service item stations. rather, i should say, at a time that employee is relieved from all other duties while monitoring those stations. now, this bill also requires stores to employ artificial intelligence to complete an assessment before implementing

bill does have the support of certain union groups. it also has the opposition of business groups. so this is a really interesting one to watch out for because as you both have mentioned, this is something that can affect how we all check out at the counter completely. we all see those lines there. all right. well, one to certainly continue to follow. thank you. all right. cruz in texas had to rescue several people from high water over the weekend. after days and days of heavy rain and flooding. the video here on your screen is out of houston, where officials were working to rescue residents and assess damage from severe weather. the flooding turned deadly when a child in the fort worth area near dallas died as he was swept away in the water. fortunately, there is finally an end in sight as the water is slowly receding. meteorologist kari hall is here. there used to rain in houston kerry, but this was just so much all at one time. over the course of just a few days and we're talking 910

even more inches of rainfall in those areas and it's flat. so you see that flooding happening very quickly. and as we take a look at the radar here, this is looping back 24 hours, where there still were some storms that developed yesterday afternoon into the evening. but now we are starting to see things quieting down there and we are expecting things to dry out. so hopefully those waters will continue to recede. and then looking here at home, we've had a very active storm pattern over the pacific northwest, with one of those storms coming through over the weekend. now that has also pushed off to the east. so we are starting out with the clear sky this morning. it's just the chilly start and we are going to have a sunny and breezy day. and for the middle of the week we'll start to warm up with a warmer weekend coming our way and summer-like temperatures for the inland areas with 70s and 80. but we're still in the 60s for today with fremont looking at a high of 66 there, 66 from hayward all the way up to oakland, as well as novato and upper 60s for santa rosa, while san francisco will be in the lower 60s. we'll get a

look at that warming trend coming our way in just a few minutes. and mike's been trying to find us some lower gas prices. yeah, you know, carry a couple of the spots i pass regularly in the morning down about a dime. let's start in the south bay, though. the lowest price in santa clara is 467 at platinum gas on washington street. now in contra costa county, we do have your best of 479 at valero on willow pass road and in solano county. we're going to look at vallejo for the new low there. that's 496 at arco on sonoma boulevard. you can report all of your low prices you're finding or the changes on gasbuddy.com. let us all know. on the roadways, there have been some changes and some have held steady. look over here. southbound 680. we had the earlier crash which had sand all over the lanes that did clear just before the build started, but then the build is now kicking in for south 680, so we're kind of holding steady there. we do have a smooth drive. the tri-valley times do show south 680, about 24 minutes from the interchange down to

end of the week, that's going to give us a shift in the wind direction and also a clear sky and make it feel a little bit more like summer. here's a look at our 7-day forecast going from those highs in the 50s on saturday to 73 today, and then some upper 70s tomorrow, and then going through the rest of the week, upper 80s for friday and saturday, and also looking at more sunshine. not a chance of any rain here any time soon, but it will be heating up in san francisco into the mid 70s. mike, are you seeing some of those numbers looking a little better? yes, a couple of key. well this key number right here, the numbers are six, 80 and 20 minutes. that's much better actually a five minute improvement in that southbound direction as folks are traveling past the earlier crash sand debris, sand barrel car all looking really good right now. past for now. now, this may be an indicator of a lighter volume of traffic this monday morning, at least right now, because we did. i didn't think we were going to get that much improvement over the course of

this morning's commute. once it cleared late in that early part, we're looking at the rest of the bay, and it does show a lighter volume as well. over here, the disabled vehicle still doesn't look like it's a big problem for the castro valley y. and we do have a crash on the shoulder south 880 between the san mateo and dumbarton bridges, which move smoothly. south bay and no major problems. we'll see a build coming up there in just a few minutes, and we continue to see a build for highway four, highway 37 and also down here for west 80 through richmond, now slowing as crowds build toward that. richmond bridge toll plaza heading into the north bay, which moves at speed here, the bay bridge, of course, we know we're going to have the backup, and we had right on schedule. it's now just starting to move a lot more slowly here in these lanes at the toll plaza. so they may have slowed the metering lights down a bit, but the hov lanes indicate a smooth drive. once you get past this, past the metering lights and onto the span back to you. oh, that looks like that shot froze the parking lot out there. probably other people feel like yeah. 621 right now, overcoming obstacles by lending a helping hand as we amplify the voices of members of the aanhpi community

are right at about 30 degrees for south lake tahoe, we are going to continue to see that sunshine while we're also seeing some sun here in the bay area. so i'll have a look at that and what to expect as our temperatures turn more summer-like over the next few days. but mike, you were calling out some slowing now in the south bay. yeah. overall we have a great commute and we know that after spring break we tend to see the overall morning commute kind of ease up a little bit shorter. lived here, but this is slowing. that's just developed after a crash. has been here. south 880 at 237. it sounds like a car went off the roadway. folks familiar with the area know you can kind of go down and toward where the roadway slides down in toward some water and some mud. that's where there's a pickup truck and crews have arrived. so a distraction and possibly the slow lane blocked. it is slow. a build now for 237 coming down toward first street. and that's pretty typical about this time. so is this slowing for 101 a little slowing for 87 into downtown? there may be more slowing just in timberlake concert tonight and tomorrow night. don't worry. you have chances to get tickets out there. we're looking over here. i have to help him with his

dance moves. so the second night's probably better. we're looking over here toward the rest of the bay. that's totally kidding. but this is not kidding. it's five at the bay bridge toll plaza. we have a smooth flow of traffic there and the build across from the richmond side. of course, there's the build there because that's the time we see more trucks and cars over to the north bay. back to you. all right. thank you. mike a deadly turn for three americans south of the border up next, new details from investigators after the discovery of three surfers who simply wanted to surf the waves in baja california. plus, a new mission is about to get underway at cape canaveral after years of setbacks, the planned launch of astronauts into space happening in just a matter of hours. and fashionistas get ready because it is the first monday in may, and that means this year's highly anticipated met gala is getting started. we'll hear exclusive from the one and only anna wintour. and what about this year's theme? you'reatching today in the w

take it. we're taking a live look outside in san jose as we're waking up to sunshine and chilly temperatures. it's in the upper 40s. and then as we look at the trend throughout the morning into the afternoon, it will be in the mid to upper 60s as that sunshine continues. still cooler than normal, but it's going to heat up quickly. we'll take a look at the 7-day forecast coming up in a few minutes. and this actually simmered down. we saw a lot of

slowing. i saw a lot of slowing over the last couple of minutes and then smoothing out now west across the san mateo bridge. no surprises. it's just the flat section with the build. we'll talk about how things are shaping up, because i do see some other slower spots developing, even on this pretty calm monday morning. we have new details in the deaths of three surfers in mexico. jack carter, road of san diego, callum robinson and his brother jake robinson disappeared last weekend during a trip to baja california. they never arrived at their rental unit in rosarito. authorities later found their bodies in a water well. investigators now believe they were the victims of a carjacking gone wrong, and that they might have been shot after trying to fight back. their friends are devastated. it's tragic. very tragic. colin was a good guy, a surfer. i knew he played rugby. mexican police already arrested at least three people in a reportedly recovered. one of the victims cell phones, which was being

used by one of those suspects. happening today, parents in one south bay school district are calling on administrators to rethink the upcoming transfer of two popular teachers, according to a web signup page. the teachers are beloved by their second and third grade students at san jose's forest hill elementary school. the posting says. the teachers are being transferred in voluntarily, and the campbell union school district will only say it is for the benefit of the community. early this morning we did contact the school district. we are waiting for their response. we know it's early. parents are planning to protest this morning outside district headquarters. the countdown to blastoff is officially underway this morning . as tonight, boeing is set to finally launch astronauts to the international space station for nasa on the starliner spacecraft. this is a look at the launch pad at cape canaveral, florida. this launch follows years of delays. back in 2019, the unmanned capsule never made it to orbit because of

software problems. boeing tried again in 2022, and the launch time now is set for a little after 730. tonight, our time here, pacific. well, there were festive cinco de mayo celebrations happening all over san jose this weekend. the festivities happened with a parade starting at city hall yesterday, and it wound around the city, ending up at plaza cesar chavez for an all day festival. and on the east side, people lined the streets for another parade. some members of our nbc bay area and telemundo 48 family proud to ride on that float. also rolling out hundreds of low riders from more than 70 local car clubs. damian trujillo and his family was in one of those lowriders. he got us some point of view video of what the parade route looked like. it looked like a very good time. i love i love the mariachi. can't

beat it. well, trending this morning, the stars will definitely be out this first monday in may, with the return of fashion's biggest night. yeah, we are talking exclusively with the event's chief organizer tonight. people everywhere will be watching as celebrities arrive for the met gala. the event raises money for the metropolitan museum of art this morning. today talks exclusively with anna wintour, chief editor of vogue magazine. she says coming up with this year's theme left a little things a little harder to find. i said, what are we going to say to people to wear to this night? and he said, well, what about garden of time, which is also magical and romantic and could mean lots and lots of different things. so i fear that we have unleashed a lot of confusion out there, and for which i deeply apologize. i don't know that she's ever apologized for anything. winter tells nbc's jenna bush hager that she feels like she broke the cardinal rule by picking a rather undefined theme. we're

guessing it's still going to be a lot of, but i would imagine, right. a lot of florals, right? yeah, i would think so. was it garden of time, florals and fashion? you know what that means? you can see the full interview and get a first look at the sears gala later on on the today show starts at 7:00, of course, right after today in maybe you'll see a lot of like salvador dali. i was going to say i was hoping they'll have melted clocks. i was thinking like garden of eden. i wonder if they'll be. oh, that could get. hey, nude. you got a lead? you did. maybe fig leaf. say the temperatures are going up. yeah. we'll get our leaves ready. i guess a lot of leaves, right? hopefully no wind. okay absolutely. you know, we'll see how things go there tonight. watching it on tv. it's a red carpet, perhaps. edited maybe. yeah we'll see if there's a delay or something going on. all right. so we had so much rain going on over the weekend here in the bay area with that very unusual may storm that came in
6:51 am
and brought in our monthly rainfall all in one day, where we saw rainfall totals in san francisco close to an inch. well, during the month of may, we usually get a little less than three quarters of an inch of rainfall. so here's what we typically see for the entire month, and what we had on saturday. with san jose getting 6/10 of an inch of rainfall, that's more than double our usual amount. so we had quite a significant storm here. and now it's just cold behind that cold front. we're feeling temperatures in the upper 30s in santa rosa. it is 44 in oakland, and we're seeing low 40s in dublin, as well as in parts of the peninsula. it's going to be a chilly start, but in san leandro, as we go throughout the morning into the afternoon, it's going to warm up nicely and our temperatures in the upper 50s at 11:00 and eventually into the mid 60s for today, upper 60s for the south bay, and 71 in concord. we're going to see temperatures in the upper 60s in the north bay. and then looking at tomorrow, it continues to warm up with some low to mid 70s
6:52 am
for parts of the east bay, as well as the south bay san mateo up to 66 degrees. and look at wednesday 73. there well, we'll start to see some low 80s for concord and fairfield, upper 70s for the south bay. so high pressure is going to be building as we go throughout the week. and we're looking at a significant warm up. it's going to feel like summer for a few days, and then we gradually start to see those numbers coming back down. but it is going to heat up fairly quickly. just thinking back to the weekend where we had highs in the 50s. today we're in the 70s and then in the upper 80s. by friday. so a quick shift there heading to summer and it's also going to be dry with no more rain chances coming our way for quite a while. mike, you were looking at the drive out of the east bay. yeah. this is southbound 880 through fremont pass tesla. but i did want to also point out the grassy hills and the lower areas. as you get closer to milpitas. and that's where that crash is still reportedly a pickup kind of sank

down, i think, into the mud there on the side of the road. and there are crews that have arrived, chp and visibility and an increased volume of traffic. so that is what causes this general slowing. south 880 passing the transition. now the flyover is just fine. so if you can use that, go for it. heading over toward 237. typical build for 101 and 87 shows right here on the map for the south bay tri valley held up nicely, but we do have a little more build coming into the area, and we do have one on one slowing through san martin and morgan hill. a pretty typical pattern, but lighter volume there as well as contra costa county with a build out of walnut creek back to you. thank you mike. happening now. small business week is kicking off in san francisco. the mayor and other leaders are hosting a public event at pier 70 tonight. and the theme is a love letter to makers and manufacturers. the week features workshops, networking opportunities and other events. and coming up next, the top stories making headlines on today in the bay, including a game changer for bay area grocery stores. one state
