4:31 am
i'm anne-marie green. new york city police descended on columbia university one day after pro-palestinian demonstrators stormed a campus building and took control. officers entered through a second-story window and cleared it out floor by floor. the university's change of heart came after realizing the protests were co-opted by professional outside agitators. just look at the damage inside, though. columbia releasing this video showing overturned stacked furniture and broken windows. >> police department, you have been warned as per city college to leave the campus. >> just blocks from that scene there was another violent confrontation between police and pro-palestinian protesters at the city college of new york. after order was restored, the mayor replaced the palestinian flag the protesters had put up with america's stars and stripes. cbs' jarred hill is joining us now from columbia with more on the wild turn of events. good morning.
4:32 am
>> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. within the past 30 minutes or so police expanded the barricaded perimeter around columbia saying that only now students who live on campus as well as essential staff can go on that campus. that's the only people allowed after that dramatic scene last night where we saw those protesters brought out. confrontations overnight as nypd officers moved in on columbia university's main campus, climbing through a window to get protesters out of hamilton hall. inside police cleared chairs used as barricades, searching for the pro-palestinian demonstrators who have occupied the academic building since early tuesday. >> we are part of a movement. >> reporter: columbia university's president asked the nypd to come in and clear out the protesters saying occupying the building and the encampment pose a clear and present danger. school officials as well as local officials are blaming outside agitators for the rise in tensions. >> these people are not columbia

[ chants ] back at columbia, police say students still at the camp could be charged with trespassing or disorderly conduct. for those who broke into hamilton hall, more serious charges like burglary. now meanwhile, at brown university in rhode island there's an apparent agreement there. the student protesters have agreed to remove their encampment with the administrators saying they would haute a vote in october considering divesting from israel. back to you. >> as you know, this sort of hing is happening across the

country. there's growing violence happening on the ucla campus now. what's going on there? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. so this is a scene that is significantly different from what we are seeing here at columbia university right now. there are literal fights that were happening around the campus of ucla yesterday. these protesters and counterprotesters really fighting apparently each other in this situation. our station out in california and los angeles is reporting that at least one person was taken away in an ambulance. we don't have any information now on the extent of their injuries, but that also really showcased how much. a powder keg this is become -- becoming among people sitting on all sides of this very emotional issue. >> yeah, definitely. jarred hill at columbia university, thank you. this morning secretary of state antony blinken is in israel for talks as the biden administration presses hamas to accept a deal to release some hostages in return for a temporary cease-fire. blinken met with president

herzog and prime minister benjamin netanyahu before he heads south to inspect the aid flowing into gaza and meeting with the families of american hostages. before his meeting with blinken, netanyahu said he intends to go ahead with a ground invasion of rafah, hamas' last stronghold, whether there's a deal or not. hamas is weighing the hostage proposal. cbs news has learned the u.s. may soon welcome some palestinians from gaza as refugees. senior biden administration officials have discussed several options for resettling a small number of gazans. it would include those with immediate family members who are american citizens or permanent residents. severe weather has again struck america's heartland. a tornado touched town yesterday in cordell, oklahoma, damaging homes and businesses. in kansas, at least one person was killed when a tornado ripped through the city of westmoreland. it destroyed or damaged more than 30 homes. yesterday's storm comes just days after dozens of tornadoes tore through the central u.s.

4:37 am
>> judge merchan did exactly what should be done and probably what was expected to be done. >> reporter: as court began for the first time, one of trump's children, eric trump, joined the former president. prosecutors played videos of trump weeks before the 2016 election responding to allegations he sexually harassed women, concerned about how it could impact his chances of becoming president. >> i have no idea who these women are. if 5% of the people think it's true and maybe 10% think -- we don't win. >> reporter: the focus then turned to keith davidson, an attorney who represented stormy daniels and karen mcdougal. both claimed they had sex with trump which he denies. davidson first described bringing mcdoug's tale and bringing the story to the "national enquirer." davidson said it was the "access hollywood" tape where trump was

4:39 am
he said, "i don't think we're going to have that. i think we're going to win, and if we don't win, you know, it depends. it always depends on the fairness of an election." trump also said that he's willing to build migrant detention camps and deploy the national guard and the u.s. military to round up and remove undocumented migrants throughout the country. and trump reiterated that he'd leave it up to the states to decide if they want to prosecute women for getting abortions or whether to monitor their pregnancies. florida's new ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy takes effect today. the measure, signed into law by governor ron desantis last year, makes it a crime to perform or participate in an abortion after six weeks. there are exceptions for rape, incest, human trafficking, and if there's a risk to the health of a mother. vice president kamala harris will be in jacksonville today for a campaign event focused on abortion rights. and we are learning new details about the fallen officers killed in that deadly shootout in charlotte, north
