5:02 am
corner but i want to start off with today's forecast because down into the valley of santa clara or at least close to san jose, we're waking up to cool and calm conditions. but the higher we go in elevations, well, the windier it gets and let's take the hills for example. just along the santa clara valley as we wake up this morning, notice how this camera is looking over the santa clara valley with clear conditions. but it's a little shaky. we're going to experience some breezy conditions today and higher elevated areas and especially off into solano county where wind speeds today can get anywhere up to around 45 miles per hour. it's going to be a gusty day out there and then to add to that the sacramento valley is experiencing very similar trend. so if you are planningen commuting out there, that is what they're expecting but better yet let's talk about today. it's going to believe warmer for many of us throughout the bay area. upper 60s through san francisco this afternoon and all the way off in the east bay we go into solano county, dethe fact it's breezy as can be we're also experiencing 80s in the forecast this afternoon at least near antioch and concord and stretching down into the
5:03 am
santa clara valley. upper 70s just around the corner as we head into this afternoon. the best part is, we're going to continue to warm up as we head into the next couple of days until that big cooldown. that roller coaster we were just talking about with reed as we head into the weekend with a slight chance of showers right around the corner. g? taking a look at the roadways. we're going to start with some looks here at some of the bay area bridges. as you work your way across the bay bridge. and traffic is moving along pretty well overall with no major issues or delays so that's great news there. let take a look at traffic elsewhere. if you are headed say highway 4, if you are working your way on 680, things are pretty cool right now as you are headed southbound out of walnut creek and working your way over to 580. traffic is moving along bell. it's that altamont pass commute that you really want to look out for. definitely going to be an issue as you work westbound coming out of tracy getting on to 580. but we have some good news for commuters to report this morning. ferry service is up and running again between
5:04 am
sausalito and san francisco. as we take a live look here. now the golden gate ferry service was suspend on the 19th after damage was spotted on one of the four piles of -- pillars of the sausalito pier there. there's some video from earlier. repairs have been completed and the pier was declared safe. so good news for commuter. reed? all right, we begin our news headlines this morning with our eye on what appears to be an escalation in police response to campus protests across the united states. so far, bay area protests seeing no arrests but down south in los angeles, riot police, they are at the ready at ucla and in fact you can see the video in the night here. it's tense. this one closely is being watched as they promise to clear a clash between pro palestinian and pro israeli protesters. they lit off fireworks and they threw items back and forth and you even see in the crowd shining lights and lasers at each other. this interrupting students' ability to study for finals and blocking access for some
5:05 am
students. >> it's wild to witness first hand. it's gone -- it's gotten to the point where i can't go to my classes and just a minute study in the library. and it's dangerous. >> so here's where we stand this morning. amidst that student's concern. the university officials have taken the step to declare the encampments unlawful and they've issued a written order to protesters to vacate. and the next step, police power versus protesters. we know it's just down south in l. a. and any updates that happened there in los angeles throughout the morning. on the other side of the country, after protesters barricaded themselves behind broken glass and furniture at columbia university, you see right here, riot police moving in. they are responding to clear that building. so far, more than 200 arrested at that new york campus and we understand they'll face potential charges of burglary for break-ins and we're also getting a blimps into police tactics and you see the nypd there. they're moving up on to a ladder of the second floor of that building. we counted about
5:06 am
50 officers climbing that ladder to get into the building. you see them. they are armed with zip ties right there. that means they're at the ready to arrest. at one point, once they got into the building, they had to use flash bang grenade to actually get in the building and get past some barricades. you know one of the demand you often hear at the campus protesters is the accusation that universities divest from companies that do business with israel. what are the connections between campuses and israel? and is the narrative true? coming up in a half hour we're going to live to new york and our cbs partners watching the protests and the police response happening in realtime. it's time now for a look at this morning's top stories. we're expecting to see various gaza focused protests breaking out around the bay area for may day. one in the east bay will see protesters marching from the west oakland b.a.r.t. station to the port in hopes of shutting down operations for the day. there will be a few in san francisco here including a march for palestine taking place at the 24th street

b.a.r.t. station. that begins at 10:00 a.m. and then at noon, there's a kite flying solidarity event taking place called bay area museums for palestine. that's at the music concourse near golden gate park's california academy of sciences. a strike and rally to stop genocide will be held at the embarcadero plaza. about 1,000 people plan to march? downtown san francisco today. better health care coverage and raises and improved workloads on their shifts. the unions represented also include janitors who work for companies around the bay area. a similar rally will happen in san jose and other cities in the u.s. and canada. shawn chitnis is live at union work with more. shawn, good morning to you. >> reporter: nicole, good morning. and so what we know about this particular may day march is that it will begin at the intersection of california

and montgomery and then work its way here to union square. now there's a discussion about what is possible in this current economic climate. we know that the workers and the hotel industry agree that times are tough. but they cannot agree as of yet on what to do about that in terms of how it will immax the business and the ability to pay those workers and give them better benefits. >> five, six. seven, eight. nine. >> reporter: king says they're ready to march on may day. with plenty of signs and employees who want to fight for better pay and working conditions. >> we're here to make a statement. >> reporter: she's a private dining server who works to take care of room service orders at the st. regis in san francisco. she's shoo had the job for almost 20 year working there since it opened. >> i do like my job. i do like customer service. i do like --

5:10 am
having to operate with less employees because of empty hotel rooms and gnat as many tourists compared to before the pandemic. alex says the focus needs to be on getting more people to come here and spend money which requires the entire city to make san francisco more appealing to tourists. >> there's a lot of money coming in and we the workers only want our fair share of that. >> reporter: the union argues that while the pandemic has affected operations, hotels still manage to increase profits in 2022. they are not giving any specifics on what kind of increases they want yet, saying may day is an early reminder to make a good offer when their contracts are up later this year. >> when hospitality can survive and when hospitality can thrive, that's good for each and every san franciscan. >> we the server, we work hard for the company. we deserve respect. >> reporter: a shared goal to make san francisco a better

place for visitors, workers and residents. but different views on what it will take to get there. so again, this is really just a demonstration. not at all a strike. but this particular union has gone on strike before and they say that they are prepared to do that if it comes to that. now we want to mention that we reached out to city officials as well as the san francisco travel association and some individual hotel groups for comment about today's event. and we have not heard back yet. the march is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. nicole, back to you. >> all right, it's still early. keep us posted there. shawn. thank you. former president donald trump's hush money trial is on break today and will resume tomorrow. yesterday, trump rallied against his gag order after the judge held him in contempt for nine violations on the witness stand and an attorney who represented stormy daniels and karen mcdougal testified for the prosecution. he said trump's allies including michael cohen paid for his clients' silence about

5:50 am
when the rain chances really start to peak. heading into friday night early saturday morning. a cold front is moving its way in and not only are we going to see increased chance of showers actually see a decrease when it comes to our daytime highs. so let's talk about that a little bit. taking a look at the next seven days, we have some big changes around the corner for us. this is very mixed forecast indeed and i mean 80s turning into 70s by friday. and our inland areas and then 50s once we head into saturday. lasting into the weekend. but by sunday we start to warm up once again and 70s are going to kick off next workweek. now that's just in our inland areas and let's head over to the bay and a lot of mixed signals in the forecast for us too here in the bay. i mean, 70s quickly turning into 50s for our friends near san francisco and oakland. partly cloudy skies to kick off the sunday forecast. it will be cooler and cloudier along the coastline as we head into early next week. monday and tuesday, for example. but we still experience that warm-up nonetheless. so i mean 50s are going to turn into upper 70s once we head into next week. so lot of changes around the corner for us here in the bay area. as we head
5:51 am
into this weekend, that cold front will also bring in some gustier conditions too. talking about areas like coastline we can see wind speeds anywhere up to around 30, 45 miles per hour at times. so take it slow on saturday morning. it will dry up as we head into early sunday morning and then we're left with beautiful weather next week with the warm-up right around the corner too. gianna, how there roads looking? not too bad. i mean we're getting a little busier of course. as we get closer to the 6:00 hour. things bunched up at the bay bridge but no crashes here which is good and in fact i just checked in with chp. pretty quiet and i don't want to jinx anything but right now extra time to have the extra cup of coffee. just be mindful though this is going to get busier and busier as the morning commute progresses. okay, scale of 1 to 5. 1 to 2 for the most part. i love to report that because that moans nice conditions on the roadways. taking 580, that castro valley y connector over towards the nimitz all clear. highway 4. no brake lights there just yet. pretty quiet. here's where the slowdowns

start though. it's for the ride as you head into the altamont pass. so lot of delivery truck drivers and lot of supercommuters making that trek out of tracy and getting on to 580. it's slow but no crashes to slow you down and once you are past north flynn the rest of the way you are clear. pretty much towards the dublin interchange. and travel times sitting at about 46 minutes. but look at the rest of our major freeways. 101 especially out of the south bay so far traffic is pretty light for anyone making the commute northbound 101 out of san jose to sfo. and look at the golden gate bridge. little crowded and we're seeing that uptick in the amount of cars on the roadway but really not seeing lot of brake lights or issues coming out of marin this morning so far, so good. your ride is moving along pretty well. reed? you know, one year ago, we brought you a story i just love by ryan yamamoto. long lost notes. the images show the faces of japanese americans only days before they were shipped off to internment camps back in 1942. so get this.
