>> reporter: even beyond the events in san francisco and here, people say they plan to continue to rally in support of palestine. high school student staged a walkout calling for a cease-fire in gaza. students wanted to show solidarity with universities having protesting the war on the campus. a teaching on gaza is being held at santa clara university campus . organizers say some professors and students will be speaking on the war and history. the goal is to educate, create a safe space and show support for protests . >> there is so much violence all over the u.s. in different campuses. it is important to keep it peaceful. we don't want

trouble or violence. we want to educate about palestine and amplify voices that are being silenced. in southern california, tensions rise at ucla between two groups over the war in gaza. counterdemonstrators launched what looked like fireworks into an encampment set up by protesters last night. they also attempted to knock down the barriers. police showed up to get that situation under control. ucla announced all classes were canceled. scuffles broke out at columbia university after officers removed protesters occupying a building. be entered last night at the request of the university. police also began removing tents that have been on campus for two weeks. the main lawn is

in the south bay we received results from the recount in the district 16 race. evan lowe will face off against sam -- for the seat in congress. after beating out joe samiti and by eight votes. >> it is past time for congress to catch up with public opinion. he announced a new push to legalize marijuana under federal law. he joined other democrats to introduce a bill that would remove cannabis from the controlled substances act.

that would empower states to create their own laws. that announcement comes a day after a historic announcement from the dea. >> they could soon reclassify marijuana which would be the biggest change in drug policy and more than half a century. right now it is a schedule one drug alongside hera when mls d. it could be moved to a schedule three, the same as ketamine and steroids. the change would allow the feds to formally recognize that marijuana has an except that medical benefit. >> how that could be a lifesaver for struggling shops. >> reporter: the assistant manager of the dispensaries had a shift in policy would be a game changer. >> what this will do is it will allow people to tax business operations. double. when we are
