shutting down campus is forcing the cancelation of classes and graduations. none of this is a peaceful protest. threatening people intimidating people is still in fear in people is not peaceful protest. it's against the law. the center is essential to democracy, but the scent must lead to disorder or to deny the rights of others of students can finish the semester and their college education. there's the right to protest, but not the right to cause chaos. >nicole>president biden, speaking to the american people this morning, attempting to draw a line between peaceful protests and violent demonstrations less than an hour ago, he condemned protests that have turned violent, will supporting the right to free speech after biden delivered his remarks a reporter asked whether the protests have forced him to reconsider american policies towards the region. the president answered. no. biden was also asked if the national guard should intervene in campus protests to which he

also answered no. now this comes as we learn this morning hundreds of protesters and students who were arrested after a late night clash between demonstrations on ucla's campus that's according to the chp last night, we were just swat teams moved in with riot gear. take a look at this video from the chaos. it's finals time at u c l a. and that's the scene at 1 of southern california's biggest universities. fights and fireworks and groups just tearing down each other's barricades. students saying the conflict makes them feel afraid. >nicole>clashes left at least

15 people injured. at least 1 of them was sent to the hospital. now this is a tricky balance between police who have made an evacuation order on campus this morning against chp confirming hundreds have been arrested. there. you see a live shot here with reporters getting ready as there on the scene and have been for hours, they said. encampments are unlawful many us ucl a story dent's getting a on their phones. about this students waking up to the news of riot police where they need to navigate before finals in spring grabs. also there is word of negotiations between the university chancellor and protesters. jewish students at uc ucla and across the country say that some of the language of the protests causes them to feel unsafe. we'll keep you updated on this story all throughout the morning. closer to home here, protests seem to be on the other side of the spectrum. we're hearing that the uc berkeley administration is now negotiating with pro gaza protesters. who have been camped out there for more than a week. that's according to a

report from the day haley cow. the student run publications. says that protests or organizers met with the university chancellor wednesday. to talk about their demands and possibly ending the encampment. last night. we asked the university about that, but they told us no comment. protests have stayed peaceful at berkeley since they began and so far there have been no arrests. breaking news taking a live look at a building fire in san francisco. this is on ... hill at leavenworth near jackson street. this fire has gone to 2 alarms with about 65. firefighters. now on the scene. and a viewer shared this video with us. you can see just flames shooting from the roof of a beige 3 story building. there also appears to be a considerable a considerable amount of smoke in the area. firefighters are dealing with smoke on all 3 levels of this building. the ground floor is commercial. the upper floors are residential so far there are no reports of injuries and the number of people displaced

cold front also packing its punch when it comes to cooler temperatures and gusty conditions, too. we're going to feel that all throughout the bay area notice how we're in the 80s today, quickly turning into the 50s by saturday in our inland areas just to warm up into the 70s into early next week. and we noticed that same trend for our friends who live along the bay, oakland san francisco. we also sit in the low 50s. or actually, mid to upper 50s in the saturday, just warm up into the low 60s. by sunday. we'll gradually get back to the 70s by mid next week. cruz. >nicole>gun. violence has become an acute problem in some parts of oakland and it can have a devastating impact. tearing families apart and in some cases, making people afraid to leave their homes. at the same time, we have now learned robberies are up 11. in oakland in the 1st 4 months of the year compared to the previous year. even so, there are some encouraging signs. violent crime is down. citywide. it dropped by 33 per compared to last year. there's also been a 50 per drop in burglary and fact and a 17%. drop in homicides. our katie

nielsen looks at what the city is doing differently. and whether people in oakland are taking notice. >>we had a couple of break ins. and it doesn't seem like it. really safer. you know, jonathan perez says they're lucky no 1 was inside guadalajara restaurant in the fruitvale when it was broken into twice. since the beginning of the year. just happened so regularly over time that we're not scared of it as much just kind of expect it somehow. according to new data released by the oakland police department. violent crime rates are down in the 1st part of the year, according to city leaders. it's all thanks to re implementing the ceasefire program. >>holly joshi leads the city's ossoff violence prevention. and has been working to revive the ceasefire program. it was

hugely popular in the early 2 thousands during the height of the gang violence in oakland. it's a multi pronged approach to identify those most likely to commit. violent crimes, then they bring in community leaders to talk to those at high risk of violence to reduce the possibility of retaliatory shootings and other serious crimes. folks that are at the center of group in and gun violence in this city are also heavily involved in other crimes, including robberies, including burglaries. including car break ins. crime rates have come down on paper since the beginning of the year. many like jonathan, say they don't feel that much safer. but hope things will continue to move in the right direction. hope i mean, what are we doing? you know, i just hope that things do get better. and i like to keep a positive article. about ways. >nicole>another part of the strategy is to continue some of the violence interruption programs that the oakland police department the new chief, will be overseeing. that once he is sworn in later this month. oakland baseball isn't

eventually look like on tuesday, the oakland city council officially gave the green light for the use of the field. baller. are investing about 1.6. 0 in park renovations. that include building stands and a new video. scoreboard. well, the team is almost finished installing turf to the new park. the bowlers play in the pioneer league that dates back to 19. and their home opener set for june 4th. so get your tickets they go on sale this monday. >

bit of clouds in the forecast for us, but once we head into this weekend forecast all going to experience windy. cool. wet conditions as the storm moves its way in from the north. that's going to bring in a series of showers for saturday, but luckily it's a fast moving cold front because once we head into sunday, we clear up fast so let's time the storm out real fast today and tomorrow, looking very similar still above average in our inland areas to add to that we'll see some cloudy skies slowly rolling their way in friday late afternoon into the overnight hours. that's what's happening. just ahead of that cold front and as we tossed stop this quote right into the 6:00 am hour just on saturday alone. notice how we're already seeing a lot of impacts. anywhere from the north bay stretching down into san francisco. moderate storm starting to build their way in from offshore. this is going to bring in chilly temperatures as well. we're going to see heavy showers continue to move to the south bay. into the 1112 o'clock hour and then into the afternoon and evening hours. we go that storm system. sweeps its way off into the sierra, bringing them plenty of snow. but look what we have. drier conditions right around the corner as we head into saturday

evening, and that's what we're gearing up for, as we head into sunday. this is a short lived system, but it is going to pack its punch. close to around an inch of rain on average. all throughout the bay area. so with that in mind, let's talk about the storm in more detail. it's a short lived system because right after saturday, we see sunshine and 60s returning into the bay area. and then 70s once we head into early next week for our inland areas, but saturday is going to be cool. it's going to be cloudy. we're going to be sitting in the 50s. not only in our inland areas, but also along the coast and the bay to that's the 1 day that all of our micro climates are all hand in hand. now, the difference from the bay vs our inland areas. we're going to see more. partly cloudy skies into early next week slowly warming up into the 70s by next wednesday, so it takes a little bit longer for our coastal areas to warm up, but still, at least it's dry weather after saturday >nicole>big changes could be coming for the cannabis industry. we hear from a local business about how the potential impact to their bottom line. >

industry about the reclassification. of the schedule. one drug there's a proposal in front of the d a. that could be the biggest policy change. and federal drug law and more than 50 years. right now it is a schedule 1 drug alongside heroin. the feds could formally recognize that it has an accepted medical benefit moving it to schedule 3 like ketamine. former california state cannabis regulator says it's not clear what this would mean here. where pot is already legal. local cannabis dispensaries. believe it would be good news for their businesses. >
