from cbs news bay area, this is the morning edition. thanks for joining us this morning. it is monday, may 6th. let's get started. waiting for the tourists to come and the season to really get going. as you can see on a sunday afternoon brunch, it's not happening. >> business owners wonder, where are the customers and at the same time governor gavin newsom says tourist numbers are golden. we have expanded to seniors, people who need assistance, for residents to feel safe. >> creating safe passage for use in the tenderloin. this is our lowrider culture.

>> how something that was once outlawed is now the center of celebrations in san jose. a former giants icon and one of baseball's greatest players is celebrating a big day. happy birthday, 93 to willie mays. good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us. >> what a living legend there. can't wait to profile him and show the story of what he has accomplished in his life. let's take a live look outside on this monday morning. it was an interesting weekend in the bay area. we had beautiful weather and then this little sal came in and it was freezing cold in the east bay but i think those days are done, right? >> exactly. i wouldn't call that little as well, it was a really big cold front that impacted a lot of us in the bay area. snow in the sierra and i

actually flew up in mill valley, you probably saw that plane hanging around just off the highway. i was supposed to fly on saturday but the weather was so bad that we ended up taking it out on sunday. blue skies, that is what we are expecting into this week's forecast. blue skies, sunshine and a lot of warmth. taking a look at what is happening today. daytime highs only topping off in the 60s near livermore, san jose and antioch topping off in the 70s. for the rest of us, in the 60s, along the coast, in the 50s. upper 80s expected later this week for inland areas, upper 70s for san francisco. that is a really big

change compared to what we have today and tomorrow. high pressure is moving in and that will warm us up a lot. as the temperature starts to increase, rain chances start to decrease. not a drop of rain in sight for the next seven days. we will continue to stay dry into our weekend forecast. if you have any outdoor activities this weekend, it won't be a washout. we will continue to see warm conditions over the next 6 to 10 days. the climate prediction center showing above average temperatures along the coast. let's talk about the roadways. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, getting busy, heading into san francisco. metering lights are on an bumper to bumper traffic already. a little crowded across the upper deck into san francisco. that westbound 80 approach is starting to slow down from richmond into berkeley. south the 680, better news to report, that earlier crash at bernal avenue, everything is now cleared out. traffic is still

backing up but we are seeing a bit of an improvement now that the lanes are open. 205 getting onto 580, to the ultimate, pretty slow. and a quiet ride into the city. some breaking news out of gaza. some 100,000 palestinians in the southern city of rafah are fleeing as israel has dropped pamphlets and leaflets announcing evacuation orders. it signals an impending ground invasion. cease-fire talks have now been put on hold . gazans and aid organizations are now fearful that this could lead to tragedy. israel says this invasion into rafah is necessary to take down the last significant strongholds of hamas. college students continue to protest on local campuses. they

are asking their schools to divest from any company with economic ties to israel. we just learned that columbia has canceled their commencement ceremony that was scheduled for may 15th. nationwide, more than 2000 demonstrators have been arrested in recent weeks. after weeks of on-campus protest at northeastern university, thousands gathered at boston's fenway park for a commencement ceremony and one person was detained for disrupting the ceremony. meanwhile, in los angeles, police cleared the palestine solidarity encampment early sunday morning. the university close the campus and warn protesters of arrest but later said the protest has been shut down peacefully, without any arrests. here is a look at some of the aftermath at usc where the school is replacing their main commencement ceremony with an event at the l.a. coliseum. as of now we are not

aware of any planned disruptions to local ceremonies. sonoma will be the following weekend and s of state after that. each of the campuses have encampments. cinco de mayo celebrations in san jose turning filing after two people were stabbed near the festivities. both victims were rushed to the hospital, one of them, a juvenile who is expected to survive. the other, an adult male, still in critical condition. they were stabbed near south king road and police say that area was packed with cars and people leaving the celebrations at the time. a number of sideshows took place in busy intersections in oakland. police responded with helipters as they were already expecting cinco de mayo burnouts. while i couldn't get to every car, police did release a piure for one of the people

taking part in a sideshow and reckless evading. this happened just before 5:45 yesterday. the drivers jeep was also impounded. oakland is trying to get more international tourists by changing the name of their airport. the port commission is that to make their controversial final vote this thursday. the name in question, the san francisco bay-oakland international airport. in an initial vote last month, commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the name change. officials hope the modified name will boost worldwide recognition of the location of the airport in the bay area. there is pushback. san francisco has filed a lawsuit to fight the name change. let's talk tourism after governor gavin newsom stood atop the golden gate bridge, saying numbers are up. he was talking about california as a whole. he did not give quite as rosy a

picture in the bay area. saying that tourists spent $2.7 billion less than two years ago. san francisco kenny, a little bit of a slide downward. counties that usually see the most tourist in the bay area have not made pre-pandemic numbers. santa clara is almost back to those levels and san mateo, you are inching up, only $100 million off. we see this as making a case that we've got work to do. often, stories like this are numbers without faces but we show you that those stories are connected to real business owners with real struggles. >> reporter: live jazz, warm weather and happy visitors. this is music to the ears of pier 39 business owners. >> we are coming from london, we landed yesterday.

>> reporter: while business activity is buzzing at pier 39, that is not the case everywhere. >> waiting for tourists to come and the season to really get going. and as you can see on a sunday afternoon brunch, it is not happening. >> reporter: matt from the pier 23 cafe says they are surviving, not thriving and says most of this was down by about 25% in 2023 compared to 2019. >> you need people coming through the door to survive. when they are not coming it is hard to keep the doors open. >> reporter: many small businesses complained that they are still recovering from the pandemic. the owner of san francisco deluxe tours tells me that tore businesses down about 40% from 2023 compared to 2019. this cab operator says business is down at least 20%. >> we've been having to work

harder for less cash. 2019 was good, 2023, the thing that has died is the international tourists. >> reporter: that is what international leaders are blaming, specifically the asian market. the ceo of san francisco travel says only about 50% of chinese tourists have returned and traditionally chinese visitors spend big money in san francisco. >> pre-pandemic, china was our longest overseas market. over $2 billion a year spent in our market. right now capped by the governments of the u.s. and the government of china. air service is capped at 50% of pre-pandemic levels. we can't get back to the normal baseline visitation because you do not have the seats in the airplanes to make it happen. >> reporter: he says l.a. gets a lot more domestic visitors and the visitation has pushed the

tourism industry will be on the 2019 levels. experts say socal strong rebound is what is driving up the entire states tourism spending. >> our record-breaking tourism numbers, last year, $150 billion. >> reporter: the governor made the announcement atop the iconic golden gate bridge. and the ceo of pier 39 says that they have been fortunate. >> the convention business is still down and for 2024 we expect it to be down and not rebound until 2025 and beyond. >> reporter: and says while tourism is trending in the right direction, san francisco still has a lot of work ahead, especially on its image and reputation. >> we are really hanging our hat on it will be good and tourism will be back. >> reporter: local experts say the number of chinese visitors will likely return to the 2019 levels by 2026.

was hot. >> it looks like it is not safe to be out driving tonight. >> that snowstorm may have passed its peak but the national weather service said keep an eye out on the road for slick conditions. back in the bay area we are waking up to beautiful sunshine, bringing us rain while they were getting their fair share of snow. taking a look at conditions today, partly cloudy skies, really nothing to write home about. and let's head over to our map, i will show you daytime highs, no matter if you live in san francisco, into the east bay, pretty much all sitting in the 60s. low 60s along the peninsula, upper 60s in the east bay. once we had into this week, we have a big change around the corner. something to look forward to. if you like warmer weather. if you like the rain over this weekend, sad to say we won't have any

more anytime soon. daytime highs will start to increase and the rain chances decrease. san francisco will hit the upper 70s later this week. and if you think that is warm, inland areas like san jose will hit the upper 80s, close to the 90s by thursday into friday. that is what high pressure does. it will also keep our temperature outlook over the next 6 to 10 days above average, widespread throughout all of the west coast. rain chances decrease , like i mentioned. over the next seven days, inland areas, upper 60s today, lower 70s tomorrow and mid-70s and then talking about 90s, in areas like concord and 80s into the santa clara valley. that warmth will be felt widespread through the state of california. so if you have

outdoor plans this weekend, keep that in mind. this might come as a surprise if you are not prepared. start hydrating and make sure you have sunscreen, everything you need to get ready to go for the weekend plans. for now, still left with 60s in the forecast. let's talk about the roadways. the bay bridge is busy, traffic is backed up, with a slow ride for commuters out of the east bay into san francisco. business as usual. 880 south bend, reports of a new crash from hayward into fremont. making things a little busy. seems like there is a trouble spot they are pretty often. 880, trying to get over to 92, a difficult part to navigate. south 680 busy because of an earlier crash. so something to think about . the crash is now cleared out, but still slow into

the pioneer league post sales to implement new ticketing system and now their website says they have lower ticket fees and better interface. the first home game of the inaugural season is scheduled for june 4th at the newly announced park that is going through a huge renovation. uc berkeley softball wrapped up their regular season this weekend with the loss to oregon state but still won the three-game series. >> they had to the pac-12 tournament next week and vern glenn spoke with one of the players whose future is looking bright and orange. >> reporter: good has been great for ryan orange, the second-year transfer is looking to make a mark with the program. her grandfather made a mark to the world 56 years ago. and orange has been aware since the sixth

grade. >> i brought the book to one of my teachers and she said look, this is your grandfather. my mom kind of talked to me and ran me through what his name means and what he did. >> when your teacher reacted like that, did you all of a sudden start to get a's? >> no. >> that's great. numbers don't lie. this is a top 20 team, 30 wind team and orange says that the february tournament in lafayette was a turning point. cal players chose to kneel during the national anthem and six bears players were verbally harassed with racial comments. >> that could have really divided us but at the end of the day i feel like it brought us closer because we went on a hot run after that. >> reporter: cal won the next 11

from cbs news bay area, this is the morning edition. right now, taking a live look , look at the far right of your screen. that is sunlight, and that is the way we start any week. let's talk to jessica right now. a warm-up, i love it. going to switch out my rain jacket for a t-shirt and jeans. >> that cold front that moved through over the weekend is long gone. it brought in a lot of issues for the state of

california. i say issues but people were shocked up in the sierra when it came to how much snow they got. we woke up to some heavy rain here in the bay. we are drying up and warming up. the only lasting impacts from that cold front is these temperatures. daytime highs only topping off in the 60s in san jose and redwood city. upper 60s near concord and low 70s near antioch. into the heart of san francisco you can see the sun rising over the bay bridge from san francisco into oakland, only sitting in the 60s with a similar trend in the wine country. but the daytime highs will warm up a lot into this week. san jose in the upper 60s today, tomorrow, into the 70s and upper 80s, potentially 90s through the santa clara valley as we get closer to this weekend forecast. high pressure will move its way in and that will keep us dry also. rain chances over the next seven days, not a drop of rain in sight. to add to

that, temperatures will stay above average for quite some time. into the daytime forecast through the bay area, the wind is a lot lighter compared to yesterday. now, the daytime wind will max out at around 20 miles per hour. but that is the wind gust. so that is the strongest we will see with lighter conditions on the inland areas. let's talk about the roadways. get you up and out the door on a monday morning. this is a snapshot of 880. just moments ago at paseo grundy. taking a look at hayward into fremont, reports of a crash with southbound adding to that. the early commute out of the dublin interchange, we had an earlier crash, lanes are clear but still

causing a bit of a backup. golden gate bridge looks great, and a look at those travel times as you look to head out the door. governor gavin newsom is making some painful cuts, parents, listen up. some family service programs could be on the chopping block . services like at $30 million program for foster youth and their caregivers and also a crisis counseling program that got about five dozen calls last year. meanwhile, the san francisco mayor working to create entertainment zones between french ., california and sacramento. >> in our collective minds we have an idea and vision but we have to share that and whatever it is it will be spectacular. >> entertainment zones were made possible after a bill authored by scott weiner past last year. still some localities to get

through before moving forward but the mayor's office says they are committed to the idea. protesters took to the seat yesterday, kayaks calling out oil tankers affiliated with the local chevron refinery. they want the city to cut ties with the company. we also saw palestinian flags there as well. the bodies of three surfers have now been identified by their parents. the week after they were reported missing, two australians and one american were found in a remote well. according to police, three suspects are in custody. they shot the surfers to steal the tires on their truck and allegedly then dump the bodies inside the wall. a fourth body that had been there much longer was also found with the other three . donald trump's hush money trial entering week three and they are slowly building their case toward a big vinicius,

which is to question michael cohen. >> reporter: donald trump received a warm welcome from fans at the sunday formula one race in miami. the former president seemed in high spirits, walking along the track and waving to spectators. but it is the hush money trial that most people are watching, entering its third week. last friday, a former white house official and top aide set the stage in manhattan. she said feet away from trump as she offered an insiders view of the chaotic moments of the campaign when a 2005 access hollywood reporting emerged. the video showed the former president talking about grabbing women in their private areas without their permission. at one point she broke down in tears while testifying that the 2016

campaign strategy was deny, deny, deny . another key witness on the docket is trumps former attorney, michael cohen. he will be questioned over payments made to stormy daniels. the former president says they were made to protect him from a false allegation that colin did so through the kindness of his heart. hicks told the court that was out of character for cohen but his credibility will likely be called into question by the defense. he previously weeded guilty to lying to congress in 2017. the open-air drug market in san francisco's tenderloin has caused issues for students walking to and from school. the city has tried cleaning up the area in recent years by increasing police presence. but now some bridge builders are helping kids navigate the streets. >> reporter: wearing a bright safety vest with the words safe

passage on the back, tatiana strives through san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood to the only public elementary school. she is among several adults who escort dozens of children to afterschool programs. >> we have a lot of things in this neighborhood that are not safe and impact the lives of the people who live here. so this is really an intervention of saying, we need this space for kids. we've expanded to seniors, people who need assistance, for residents to feel safe walking through their neighborhood. >> long known for their open drug markets, mental illness and homeless, it is also home to 3000 children, the highest concentration of children in san francisco, largely from immigrant families. >> if something happened to the kids when they are walking, how will i face the families. when

safe passage came, they formed a very strong organization. >> a group of mothers started the effort in 2008 after a child temporarily went missing. >> safe passage is a program to detect the community, the kids and senior citizens. just to detect the tenderloin community. >> the program guides the students along the cleanest and calmest routes. >> when i walk through the street i just say, thank you, safe passage by just existing. >> reporter: redirecting them to avoid people acting erratically or overdosing. sometimes they use their bodies to block children from seeing things that they shouldn't. >> we can change the world in a better way by our presence and our examples and our positivity and positive connection. i feel

driverless cars in the coming weeks. it is the first step to expanding service from san francisco to sunnyvale. rights will only be given to employees down to the border of san mateo. the fall guy was number one at the weekend box office, earning $28.5 million. below industry expectations. the star wars prequel took the number two spot with just over $8 million in time for its 25th anniversary and the tennis drama challengers slipped to third place. a lot of people celebrated cinco de mayo over the weekend and we could not have asked for better weather. san jose celebrates the birth place of lowrider culture in northern california with hundreds of tricked out cars that symbolize the community. john ramos picks up the story. >> reporter: you may be aware that cinco de mayo celebrates

the victory over france but they also celebrated another victory, this time over at the battle of lowriders. as the parade moved in king road, it was clear what this place is famous for. and larry couldn't be happier. >> this is our culture. chicano culture. this is east side. this is epic. this is it right here. you are in the mecca. >> reporter: lowriders, the flashy, hydraulic works of art, dominated the parade that ended at the corner of king and story road. a place known as the center of the universe for the car culture and also the center of tommy's family life. he spent years building his beloved

chevy impala ss convertible, sometimes choosing between the light bill in the chrome bill. for him, that choice was easy. >> for me, it's personal. i built it for me and my family. people have always tried to bite off of me but i can't let this one go. i raised my family doing this. >> reporter: it may be hereditary because every member of the family has built their own car, including tommy's daughter. >> i grew to love it. that's why i decided to build my car, so i could be rolling with my dad. >> reporter: these cars have come to represent family as well as latinx culture. but some in the community saw the cars as a threat and cruising was banned in the 1980s, driving a wedge between the city and the latino residents. >> i feel like they allow people to pop their fireworks but they took our culture away. now they are finally allowing it to come back. >> reporter: in 2022 the city

reversed the ban on cruising and as the lowriders gathered, it felt like there was a chance that some fences were being mended. >> the relationship between the culture is starting to come about with the police. they are understanding that a lot of these guys that have these cars are not out doing bad things. we have jobs, businesses. >> reporter: back out at the parade, larry was feeling hopeful about the future . >> lowriding is part of our culture. it is still here, it is alive and thriving. is a great thing, a positive thing. >> reporter: and now east san jose, the mecca of lowriding, gets to celebrate may 5th with the victory of its own. similar scenes at the bay area's newest cinco de mayo celebration on treasure island with the mariachi band. many

came out to celebrate at the islands gold bart distillery usually known for its upscale ambience . yesterday it transformed into a lively fiesta for cinco de mayo for the very first time. >> we are here having a great time. we've listen to all kinds of music. we had rock 'n roll, salsa and now mariachi. >> this marked a successful celebration for everyone in treasure island. gold bar saying they are committed to keeping the celebration alive as the island keeps adding more resident every year and that it is a great opportunity to start new traditions for a new business. i love hearing the mariachi and it is so fun to see the community come together. she was having a good time. >> and that dog is also so cute. let's take a live look outside. this is the view from

our mt. diablo camera. good morning to all of you on the east bay. we saw some rain over the weekend. nothing compared to the severe weather experienced in the central united states. some are comparing the storm damage in the lone star state to a hurricane. >> it is the storm system that brought many lies and even left a five-year-old boy dead. thousands are now without power and without homes to go to. in harris county where houston lies, officials say that hundreds of residents and pets still need rescuing. police say the storm turned the city of clifton into an island. now it is moving into oklahoma and other surrounding states. we will keep a close eye on that into the afternoon hours. let's take a look at back here in the

bay. over the weekend we experience that cold front that brought in lasting impacts, today, we are topping off only in the 60s from livermore to redwood city from that storm system that came through on saturday. luckily it left behind dreyer weather on the backend but boy, was it an active storm. today and tomorrow, a mix of sun and clouds and they continue to sweep in from the north with wind anywhere up to around 15 to 20 miles per hour . to add to that, we will stay dry into this week. high pressure moving in, that will keep us dry and warm. we will see above average temperatures right around the corner. we are seeing a mix of sun and clouds today and tomorrow, and will not see a drop of rain anytime soon. but what we are going to see is a warming trend. that will start into this week's forecast, thursday into friday. areas like san jose topping off in the

upper 80s. inland areas close to the 90s and might even hit the 90s. lots of changes around the corner for us as we head into this work week's forecast. over the next seven days, concord, there is a good chance we will hit the 90s into friday. averaging out into next week. plenty of sunshine, not a drop of rain into next week's forecast. look at this temperature spread, starting off the week with 60s, a lot more sunshine in the inland areas, 80s and 90s just around the corner. all the microclimates are doing a little bit of a spread into this week, in the bay, upper 60s turned to 70s tomorrow, we will hit that 80s, but inland areas, partly cloudy skies kicking off this weekend, with not a drop of rain in sight. so we will start to feel a lot more spring and summerlike weather around the corner. we will continue to see that trend into next week. the climate

crashes. things are pretty slow over toward the san mateo bridge. san jose commuters, morning to you. north 101, a little sluggish past the 286 connector, but overall, not a bad commute. there are some issues as far as public travel goes. ace rail number three, delete this morning. so check the schedule before heading out the door. over at the golden gate, a little crowded south bound but no major issues. if you are making that ride westbound 80, that is about a 26 minute ride. from highway 4 down to the maze, things are starting to back up a little bit as you head over into san francisco. how about a little bit of music. brazil's high temperatures didn't stop madonna from celebrating the last show of her latest tour. >> according to the rio de janeiro city hall tourism, about 1.6 million people flocked to copacabana beach to attend the

concert. it breaks the previous record of 130,000 fans. >> yes, and i can personally confirm that there were some bay area natives in that crowd . check out that sea of people. to give you an idea of just how massive this show was, 18 sound towers spread along copacabana beach to make sure everyone can hear the hits and party along. they also sprayed water on fans and gave out drinking water because temperatures reached about 82 degrees late into the night when madonna said goodbye. she is now off her tour and it will be of big rest, i'm sure, for the material girl.
