exactly what i have come to expect from the former president. his statements are in his own self-interest and not what is best for this country. they are sick. you know, the idea that he would refuse to commit to the peaceful transfer of power, one of the most basic fundamental principles of any united states politician in adhering to the u.s. constitution. he refuses to do that. we all know why. in his mind elections are honest if he wins them. they are dishonest or rigged if he loses. 60+ courts in the previous election told us this was an honest and fair election and that donald trump lost. joe biden is our president.

the war between israel and hamas continues to be a flashpoint here at home and abroad. earlier today the lapd and campus police at the university
3:22 pm
of southern california cleared a pro-palestinian encampment. no arrests were made. also today more protests at the university of texas at austin. just a reminder, the student protest on college and university campuses are in opposition to the catastrophic war in gaza that has killed more than 35,000 palestinians and displaced more than 2 million, and includes calls for a cease-fire. meanwhile, in the reporting from axios the biden administration stopped a shipment last week of u.s.-made ammunition meant for israel. it is the first time the u.s. has stopped a shipment since the attack by hamas. and the arduous road to a cease- fire deal between israel and hamas remains rocky. the current round of negotiations in cairo wrapped up earlier today with hamas negotiators leaving town to consult with leadership, but not before reiterating its
3:23 pm
demand that israel and attacks in gaza in exchange for the release of remaining israeli hostages, something prime minister netanyahu has ruled out. nbc news also confirmed the cia director william burns plans to travel to israel from the qatar capital tomorrow for more hostage and cease-fire negotiations. joining me now is the former ambassador dennis ross, a former middle east envoy and an msnbc foreign affairs analyst. thank you very much for coming back to the sunday show. based on today's reporting what do you think the chances are israel and hamas could still agree to a cease-fire deal? >> i think there is still a possibility. although, all along i have been a little hesitant to get optimistic. part of the reason is ultimately the deal depends upon the leader of hamas in gaza. there is a political leadership
3:24 pm
of hamas based largely on gaza. he is the head of the military wing. no one has been a good predictor of what his decisions are likely to be in the very beginning of this. it is unclear to me that he feels it is in his interest to do a deal at this point. i think we are still in a position where lsu makes a decision that it is in his interest, we are lot -- not likely to see one. over the course of the weekend we saw prime minister netanyahu make strong statements about how this is not a deal that is going to provide a permanent cease-fire, because he is also addressing pressure from the right wing of his coalition. two ministers who have basically said they would pull out if you went ahead with the deal on the terms that have been on the table. he is thoroughly trying to suggest that he is not simply going to cave and end the war. i think we have a couple of different kinds of actors here
3:25 pm
they do not labor producing a deal right now. i don't entirely count it out. i think it is hard in the end for netanyahu to not accept a deal if in fact one comes around and he is prepared to go for one. >> on that note, ambassador, the new york times has reported israeli officials are considering an agreement with a wish your oversight of the gaza strip with the u.s. in a group of arab countries including egypt and saudi arabia. the israelis would agree in exchange for normalizing relations with saudi arabia. given everything that you just said, one of the prospects of an agreement like that coming together still? >> i think there are several different layers here. the normalization deal with the saudis depends upon there being a palestinian component. the palestinian component that the saudis would find sufficiently credible, they could say that as part of
3:26 pm
normalizing with israel and as part of getting the defense treaty with the united states, there is going to be a pathway toward a palestinian state that looks different than anything we've seen before. different than the negotiations that i basically was a part of. i do not know how close we are to something like that. that is one layer. the other layer is arab states like egypt, the united arab emirates, morocco actually coming on the ground in effect to replace the israelis and represent a kind of transitional administration to in a sense manage gaza until you can have a reformed palestinian party take its place after some period of time. that looks like a very ideal outcome. the israeli states leave, there will be a palestinian replacement overtime. you have an alternative to
3:27 pm
hamas. it all looks like the kind of pathway you would like to see. i think the problem is twofold. one, the israelis, even people like izancod want to reserve the right to go after the pockets of hamas if they re- emerge. i am not sure there states will accept being in a position where they will be in gaza and the israelis could come in and out. i think that is a question mark. a second is the united arab emirates and we are prepared, but we need to know that we are a bridge to a different teacher. that depends upon the palestinian authorities. we are not seeing anything to demonstrate that yet. >> all right, we are out of time. i cannot have you here and not ask about nbc news reporting, which have confirmed mike johnson and chuck schumer will soon invite prime minister
3:28 pm
netanyahu to address a joint session of congress. what do you think is behind the strategy of this kind of move? >> i understood what he spoke in 2015 with the aim and what the purpose was. i would guess the reason they would do such an invitation is to demonstrate there is a strong relationship or support for israel. i guess this is one of those things that we will have to see if it materializes or not. it seems a little strange in the current setting, especially given the issues related to prime minister netanyahu. >> i am glad that i asked. that sort of confirms to me i am not quite understand what is going on with that invitation. as always, thank you very much for coming to the sunday show. >> my pleasure. trump on trial. the alleged gag order violations he can still be punished for. another week of witness
